Title:
A
Research Framework for Improving Personal Information Management
Capabilities
Abstract: Several recent
researches stress this tricky problem of personal information
management. Personal information management is related “to both the
practice and the study of the activities people perform in order to
acquire, organize, maintain, retrieve and use information items”. But
this field is often considered as a part of the human computer
interface aspect of information systems. This means that most
researches in this field are focused on technology and tool’s
functionalities. They rarely address users’ needs or the way people
proceed to manage their personal information with the existing tools. A
tool can help people to remind information. It can also help to
reactive knowledge but it can't give an operational knowledge also call
a competence to someone who not owns this knowledge previously. Others
problems seems not to be addressed as the availability of information
due to the obsolescence of the tools and data formats evolution through
time. That kind of questions lead us to start a research project
focused on the way people manage their own personal memory. Our
research addresses different aspects of information management. As a
case study, we have explored the way that a structuring information
tool could help students to build a report about a project assignment.
We plane also to lead a survey to describe the different ways people
collect, gather, reuse and share information. We have also launch a
review of existing tools in the domain of personal information
management. We would like to take benefit of the conference to present
our work and views about several points related to personal information
management We will be also very pleased to exchange on what could be
done to perform a valuable research project on that topic.
