Title: Knowledge Structures and Business Models of Organisations: Conceptual Models of Knowledge Businesses

Abstract: A number of knowledge management models are available that show the relationship between knowledge, information and an organisation’s infrastructure.
However, in practice the use of these models is very limited, and they cannot be used to give a detailed picture of the relationship between the business’s structure
and its knowledge. This paper presents a review of the literature with regard to knowledge structures in organisations and introduces a simple alternative view of the role of knowledge and information within a business. The model proposed presents an idea of a series of structural models that represent a way of grouping business
operations based upon the relationship between knowledge and its use in the creation of products or services. The proposed model can be used as a foundation for the conceptualisation of more detailed structural models, and a suggested approach is based on a Soft System Methodology. Empirical research is being undertaken on the proof of the validity of these models, however the underlying framework would give an organisation an insight into how may view itself with respect to its knowledge structures.
