Title: A Role for Semiotics in Evaluating Project
Documentation
Abstract: Information
technology (IT) projects and Information system development (ISD) have a
long history extending over half a century. The motivation for this
paper is a re-examination of the continuing gross IT Project failure rates
and the increasing IT System maintenance costs. We review the role of documentation
(produced in the System Development Life Cycle) as a contributing factor
in success or failure of IT projects. In our review, we attempt to discover
from existing research just what is reported about approaches to evaluating
the role of project documentation. We find and describe a framework from
semiotic studies of ISD artifacts. Gaps in the literature are identified
and potential areas for research are highlighted.
