Title:
Sustainability,
Stakeholder
Orientation, and Good Governance of Universities
Abstract:
The European
universities
and especially the Spanish ones face an environment characterized as:
trend to reduce public direct funding in the
university, models of public funding depending on objectives and
aims, and increased autonomy of universities in the academic
areas. The particular characteristics of
the universities as public sector organizations show the need to review
organizational and strategic management theories taking into account
their raison d'être and of the principles which govern good
management and the stakeholders’ orientation of public
universities. The good management characteristics within the
university may be summarized as follows: it has been democratically
elected as a result of conveying to society in an honest way its
program for government and its social values, it has absolute reverence
and respect for the laws, and manages its program efficiently in
accordance with the aim of serving the general interest of the
people. The response to public universities’ new challenges call
for a stakeholders approach and an updated process of strategic
management.
