Title: Adoption Factors for Mobile Gaming in
South Africa
Abstract: The mobile communications market has
reached a fairly mature state with regards to text and voice services and
therefore new services are continuously investigated to increase the number
of revenue streams generated from the existing mobile phones. One of
the possible revenue streams is mobile gaming and it is therefore essential
to understand the factors that influence its adoption. The study focuses
on two important adoption factors which are deemed pertinent to the South
African telecommunications environment namely the cost of the service and
the social influence of this service. The nature of the research question
lends itself to a research strategy based on survey sampling to collect data
using questionnaires within a cross-sectional time horizon. The results
from the study indicated that the factors influencing the adoption patterns
for the South African mobile gaming users are significantly different than
those found in a comparative study conducted in Norway in 2002.
