Title:
An Examination of Electronic Commerce Adoption Experiences in Small
Medium Enterprises (SMEs): An Exploratory Study of Indonesia
Abstract: The use of e-commerce in small medium-sized enterprises
(SMEs) has become an important topic in information systems research.
At present, there are a large number of well-documented benefits derived
from e-commerce, as well as barriers to e-commerce adoption in SMEs. This
literature suggests that the advent of e-commerce has provided SMEs with
considerable competitive advantage and access to global market, previously
lacking by comparison to larger businesses. Given the benefits above, more
and more governments are now promoting the use e-commerce in SMEs. This is
no less the case in South East Asia economies such as Indonesia. Despite
the enormous attention given to encouraging SMEs to adopt e-commerce both
by academics as well as governments, little research has been carried out
comparing the current benefits and barriers listed in the literature with
the actual experiences of SMEs and consultants in adopting e-commerce, especially
in countries like Indonesia. It is, therefore, the aim of this paper to address
this issue by providing a closer look at actual experience of Indonesian
SMEs and consultants. This paper presents a series of case studies of SMEs
in Indonesia that have either recently adopted e-commerce technology to who
have decided to forgo that adoption. The aim of the study was to determine
the appropriateness of benefits of e-commerce and barriers to e-commerce
adoption in the Indonesia SME sector.
